55. A parents’ representative whose child no longer attends the school may remain a member of the governing board until the next meeting held pursuant to section 47.

A vacancy resulting from the departure of a parents’ representative shall be filled, for the unexpired portion of the representative’s term, by a parent designated by the other parents’ representatives on the governing board.

A vacancy resulting from the departure or disqualification of any other member of the governing board is filled, for the unexpired portion of the term, according to the mode of appointment prescribed for the member to be replaced.

A position as parents’ representative that is not filled at the meeting of parents called in accordance with the first paragraph of section 47 is dealt with as a vacancy as provided for in the second paragraph of this section.

55. An orientation committee is hereby established in each school, composed of the following persons:

(1)  parents of students attending the school, who are not members of the school staff, appointed by the school committee;

(2)  two or more of the teachers at the school elected by their peers;

(3)  a person, other than a teacher, who provides student services or special educational services to the students of the school, elected by his peers;

(4)  a member of the support staff assigned to the school, elected by his peers;

(5)  in the case of a school providing education to students in the second cycle of the secondary level, two students in that cycle elected by students enrolled at the secondary level;

(6)  where the orientation committee so decides, one representative of the community, elected by the committee.

(1)  parents of students attending the school, who are not members of the school staff, appointed by the school committee;

(3)  one person representing the members of the non-teaching professional staff assigned to the school, elected by them;

(4)  one person representing the members of the support staff assigned to the school, elected by them;

(5)  in the case of a school providing education to students in the second cycle of the secondary level, two students in that cycle elected by students enrolled at the secondary level;

(6)  where the orientation committee so decides, one representative of the community, elected by the committee.
