52. (1)  When there are no stop signals at an intersection or when they are not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, by stopping or slowing down, to a pedestrian who has begun to cross before the vehicle in question so that the latter is in danger of hitting him.

(2)  No pedestrian shall have the right to leave a sidewalk or safety zone to cross in front of a moving vehicle which is too close to him to yield him the right of way.

When a vehicle stops or slows down to allow a pedestrian to cross, the vehicle behind it shall not have the right to pass it.

Any pedestrian crossing a public highway elsewhere than at an intersection or safety zone shall yield the right of way to all vehicles travelling on the public highway.

Notwithstanding the above provisions, every driver of a vehicle must be careful to avoid hitting a pedestrian and particularly so in the case of a child or an aged or infirm person.

(3)  When there is a sidewalk for the use of pedestrians, they shall not be entitled to travel on the public highway.

When there is no sidewalk for the use of pedestrians, they must use the extreme left side of the public highway so as to face the vehicular traffic.

(4)  No pedestrian shall stand on the carriageable portion of a public highway to solicit from a driver of a vehicle transportation in his car.
