If a candidate retire too late to allow of the printing of new ballot papers, and it be necessary to proceed with the polling because there remain more than one candidate, the deputy returning officer shall make use of the ballot papers on hand after plainly striking out, in a uniform manner by a line in ink, the name of the candidate who has withdrawn, and such ballot papers shall serve for all the purposes of the election.
