271. (1) The mayor or any councillor may resign his seat in the council by transmitting his resignation signed by himself, to the secretary-treasurer of the municipality; the term of office of the mayor or councillor shall expire upon the delivery of the writing to the secretary-treasurer who shall transmit it to the council at the next sitting.
(2) The death of the mayor or a councillor shall terminate his term of office.
(3) The term of office of the mayor or councillor shall also terminate if he has failed to attend the sittings of the council during 90 consecutive days following the last sitting which he attended; if he has not attended any sitting since he became a member of the council, the delay shall be computed from the first sitting which he could legally have attended; the term of office shall end upon the closing of the first sitting held after such 90 days unless, at such sitting, the council is of the opinion that it was in fact impossible for the person concerned to attend the sittings. Nevertheless, if the person concerned attends no sitting of the council within 30 days after the sitting at which the council expressed such opinion, his term of office shall terminate on the thirtieth day; the secretary-treasurer shall so inform the council at the first following sitting after such thirtieth day.
