Where the angle between the steering column of a low-speed vehicle and a horizontal plane is less than 60 degrees, the steering column must be capable of retracting by at least 100 mm in order to minimize the recoil of the steering wheel in case of frontal impact. That length may be shorter if other devices are installed in the vehicle to limit the risks of upper body injury in case of frontal impact, for example the installation of an air bag, and a frontal fixed barrier impact test at 40 km/h so demonstrates.
