HIGHWAY SAFETY CODE — RIGHT-HAND DRIVE

.
The use of right-hand drive road vehicles on public roads is prohibited, except for:
(
1
)
vehicles registered outside Québec;
(
2
)
vehicles manufactured 25 years ago or more;
(
3
)
trucks, snowblowers and equipment transport vehicles within the meaning of the Regulation respecting road vehicle registration (chapter C-24.2, r. 29);
(
4
)
vehicles required to make frequent stops along a road in performing work in connection with a public service;
(
5
)
special mobile equipment;
(
6
)
road vehicles belonging to a driving school or to an institution holding a permit to dispense instruction in the driving of heavy trucks issued under section 10 of the Act respecting private education (chapter E-9.1);
(
7
)
(End of effect: 2012-09-16)
vehicles propelled solely or partially by an electric motor if the following requirements are met:
(
a
)
the vehicle is used solely for purposes of exhibition, demonstration, evaluation or testing and a declaration in that respect was made in accordance with paragraph
a
of subsection 1 of section 7 of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (S.C. 1993, c. 16);
(
b
)
the driver of the vehicle has a copy of the declaration with him or her and is responsible for showing it on request of a peace officer;
(
c
)
the vehicle is owned by an undertaking that develops technology or electric components or software designed for the platform of the vehicle and relating to the powertrain;
(
d
)
testing on a public highway is necessary for technology or component validation;
(
e
)
the model of the vehicle does not exist with left-hand drive;
(
f
)
the Société gave its approval under section 214 of the Highway Safety Code (chapter C-24.2), as the case may be.

Section 1 does not apply to road vehicles whose ownership was transferred before 29 April 2009 to either a natural person whose main residence was in Québec, or a legal person or partnership whose main establishment was in Québec, and registered in Québec before 31 March 2011.
