28. (1)  Every motor vehicle operated at night on a public highway shall be provided with at least two single or double white lights placed at each side in front, and two red lights at the rear; one white light in front and one red light at the rear, in the case of a motorcycle without a side-car.

Each of such lights must be visible at a distance of 150 m in front or in rear as the case may be.

(2)  If such vehicle hauls a trailer or semi-trailer, the red lights shall be placed at the rear of the trailer or semi-trailer.

(3)  The white lights must be so constructed, located, arranged and adjusted as to produce, in normal weather conditions and on a level road, light enabling the driver to see a person or thing at a distance of 90 m.

(4)  The marker bearing the registration number at the rear must be sufficiently illuminated to enable such number to be easily identified at a distance of at least 30 m.

(5)  No motor vehicle shall be provided with more than two white lights at the rear, called backing lights. Such lights must remain extinguished when the vehicle is moving forward.

(6)  Every bicycle, tricycle or moped operated at night on a public highway must be provided, in front, with a white light and, in rear, with a red light or with a reflector of the same colour, approved by the Department. Each light or reflector must be placed in such a way that the luminous signal be visible at a distance of at least 150 m.

For the purposes of this subdivision a bicycle and a tricycle are deemed to be motor vehicles.

(7)  Only police or fire department vehicles or ambulances may be provided with a fixed, intermittent or revolving red light.

(8)  The driver of a motor vehicle shall dim the headlights:

(a)  at the latest whenever reaching approximately 150 m from a vehicle he is about to meet;

(b)  whenever he is following another vehicle at a distance of less than 60 m, unless he intends to pass such vehicle;

(c)  whenever he is driving in a road where there is adequate street lighting.

In no case shall a motor vehicle be provided with more than two single or double white lights in front emitting a beam of light exceeding 300 cd power.

(9)  In addition to the lights prescribed in subsections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of this section, every motor vehicle other than a pleasure vehicle and any combination of vehicles measuring at any point more than 2 m in width and operated at night on a public highway must carry:

(a)  in front, two amber lights located within 15 cm from the extreme right side and within 15 cm from the extreme left side of the vehicle;

(b)  at the rear, two red lights and two reflectors of the same colour, one of each located within 15 cm from the extreme right side, and the others within 15 cm from the extreme left side of the vehicle.

Such lights and reflectors must be visible at a distance of 150 m from the front or rear, as the case may be.

(10)  In addition to the lights prescribed by subsections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 of this section, every motor vehicle other than a pleasure vehicle and any combination of vehicles measuring at any point more than 2 m in width or 9 m in length, operated at night on a public highway, must carry:

(a)  in front, three amber lights. Such lights shall be placed horizontally, at the centre and as near the top of the vehicle as possible. They shall be spaced not less than 15 cm nor more than 30 cm apart;

(b)  at the rear, three red lights placed horizontally, at the center and as near the top of the vehicle as possible. They shall be spaced not less than 15 cm nor more than 30 cm apart.

In the case of a combination of vehicles, the three front lights shall be located as near the top of the traction vehicle as its permanent structure will permit and the three rear lights as near the top of the trailer or semi-trailer as its permanent structure will permit.

In the case of vehicles or combinations of vehicles having only the operator’s cab as superstructure, the three red lights shall be placed horizontally, at the rear of the platform or between the two red lights required for any vehicle, as provided in subsections 1 and 2 of this section.

Such lights must be visible at a distance of 150 m from the front or rear as the case may be.

(11)  In addition to the lights prescribed by subsections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10 of this section, every motor vehicle or combination of vehicles more than 6,10 m long, operated at night on a public highway, shall carry:

(a)  one amber light located sidewise, on each side of the vehicle, near the front part;

(b)  one red light located sidewise, on each side of the vehicle, near the rear part.

Such lights must be visible at a distance of 150 m from the side of the vehicle or combination of vehicles.

(12)  No object carried shall exceed the length of a motor vehicle or combination of vehicles by more than 1 m in front and 2 m in rear. For any load exceeding such limits, a special permit must be obtained from the Department.

To the extremity of any object projecting 1 m or more from the rear of a motor vehicle or combination of vehicles, there shall be affixed in the day-time a square red flag the sides of which do not measure less than 30 cm and, in addition, a red light at night, visible at a distance of 150 m from the rear or sides, in addition to the regulation lights provided for in subsections 1 to 7 of this section.

(13)  All the lights and reflectors mentioned in the preceding subsections shall be kept at all times in good operating condition and free from any dirt. Any policeman, constable or officer of the Department may, at any time, require a driver to have a light or reflector repaired immediately or cleaned.

(14)  Notwithstanding the preceding subsections, the headlamp of a motorcycle or moped driven on a public road must be kept turned on at all times;

(15)  Every autobus, truck or combination of vehicles operated at night on a public highway, outside a city, town or village, shall be provided:

(a)  with portable flares, lamps or lanterns approved by the Department and emitting a luminous signal visible at 150 m; or

(b)  with portable reflectors approved by the Department.

(2)  If such vehicle hauls a trailer or semi-trailer, the red lights shall be placed at the rear of the trailer or semi-trailer.

(3)  The white lights must be so constructed, located, arranged and adjusted as to produce, in normal weather conditions and on a level road, light enabling the driver to see a person or thing at a distance of three hundred feet.

(4)  The marker bearing the registration number at the rear must be sufficiently illuminated to enable such number to be easily identified at a distance of at least one hundred feet.

(5)  No motor vehicle shall be provided with more than two white lights at the rear, called backing lights. Such lights must remain extinguished when the vehicle is moving forward.

(6)  Every bicycle, tricycle or moped operated at night on a public highway must be provided, in front, with a white light and, in rear, with a red light or with a reflector of the same colour, approved by the Department. Each light or reflector must be placed in such a way that the luminous signal be visible at a distance of at least five hundred feet.

For the purposes of this subdivision a bicycle and a tricycle are deemed to be motor vehicles.

(7)  Only police or fire department vehicles or ambulances may be provided with a fixed, intermittent or revolving red light.

(9)  In addition to the lights prescribed in subsections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of this section, every motor vehicle other than a pleasure vehicle and any combination of vehicles measuring at any point more than eighty inches in width and operated at night on a public highway must carry:

(a)  in front, two amber lights located within six inches from the extreme right side and within six inches from the extreme left side of the vehicle;

(b)  at the rear, two red lights and two reflectors of the same colour, one of each located within six inches from the extreme right side, and the others within six inches from the extreme left side of the vehicle.

Such lights and reflectors must be visible at a distance of five hundred feet from the front or rear, as the case may be.

(10)  In addition to the lights prescribed by subsections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 of this section, every motor vehicle other than a pleasure vehicle and any combination of vehicles measuring at any point more than eighty inches in width or thirty feet in length, operated at night on a public highway, must carry:

(a)  in front, three amber lights. Such lights shall be placed horizontally, at the centre and as near the top of the vehicle as possible. They shall be spaced not less than six nor more than twelve inches apart;

(b)  at the rear, three red lights placed horizontally, at the center and as near the top of the vehicle as possible. They shall be spaced not less than six nor more than twelve inches apart.

In the case of a combination of vehicles, the three front lights shall be located as near the top of the traction vehicle as its permanent structure will permit and the three rear lights as near the top of the trailer or semi-trailer as its permanent structure will permit.

In the case of vehicles or combinations of vehicles having only the operator’s cab as superstructure, the three red lights shall be placed horizontally, at the rear of the platform or between the two red lights required for any vehicle, as provided in subsections 1 and 2 of this section.

Such lights must be visible at a distance of five hundred feet from the front or rear as the case may be.

(11)  In addition to the lights prescribed by subsections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 10 of this section, every motor vehicle or combination of vehicles more than twenty feet long, operated at night on a public highway, shall carry:

(a)  one amber light located sidewise, on each side of the vehicle, near the front part;

(b)  one red light located sidewise, on each side of the vehicle, near the rear part.

Such lights must be visible at a distance of five hundred feet from the side of the vehicle or combination of vehicles.

(12)  No object carried shall exceed the length of a motor vehicle or combination of vehicles by more than three feet in front and six feet in rear. For any load exceeding such limits, a special permit must be obtained from the Department.

To the extremity of any object projecting three feet or more from the rear of a motor vehicle or combination of vehicles, there shall be affixed in the day-time a square red flag the sides of which do not measure less than twelve inches, and, in addition, a red light at night, visible at a distance of five hundred feet from the rear or sides, in addition to the regulation lights provided for in subsections 1 to 7 of this section.

(13)  All the lights and reflectors mentioned in the preceding subsections shall be kept at all times in good operating condition and free from any dirt.
