256. Any insurer that is not a mutual association may make investments or loans other than those contemplated by sections 244 to 255, subject to the following restrictions:
(a)  the total amount invested in investments and loans under this section shall not exceed 7 per cent of the insurer’s total assets;
(b)  the insurer shall not, under this section, derogate from the restrictions imposed by subsection 2 of section 248, section 249, section 252 and subsection 2 of section 253; nor shall it derogate from the restrictions imposed by the regulations under section 250.
