56. If the justice of the peace has reasonable cause to believe the defendant will abscond, he may order that, failing immediate payment, the defendant be imprisoned for such time as he may fix in accordance with section 63.10.
Sections 63.11 and 63.12 apply, where such is the case.

56. (1)  Where, by virtue of any act or law so authorizing, the justice of the peace by this conviction adjudges against the defendant or accused payment of a penalty or compensation, and also imprisonment, as punishment for an offence, he may, if he thinks fit, order that the imprisonment in default of distress or of payment shall commence at the expiration of the imprisonment awarded as a punishment for the offence.
(2)  The like proceeding may be followed upon any conviction or order made in accordance with this section or section 53, as if the act or law authorizing the conviction or order had expressly provided for a conviction or order in the terms permitted by this section or by section 55.
