401. Every candidate is guilty of an offence under this act, punishable by a fine of one hundred to five hundred dollars and, in default of payment of the fine and costs, to imprisonment for one to twelve months, who signs a written document presented to him in the form of a summons or claim by any person, between the date of the writ of election and that of the polling, if such document binds him to follow a line of conduct that will prevent him from exercising liberty of action in the Legislature, if he is elected, or to resign as a member if required to do so by any person.
