312. If a deputy returning-officer has not enclosed in the ballot-box the statement of the ballot-papers counted by him or if, for any other cause, the returning-officer cannot ascertain, on the day and at the hour appointed by him for the addition of the votes, the exact number of votes given for each candidate, he may adjourn the addition to a later hour or day, or from day to day if need be, provided that such adjournments do not total more than two weeks.
