236. (1)  At the hour fixed for opening the poll, the deputy returning-officer and the poll-clerk, in the presence of the candidates or their agents, shall open the ballot-box and ascertain that there are no ballot-papers or other papers therein.
(2)  The deputy returning-officer shall then lock the box and keep the key thereof.
